Welcome to our 2017 Summer Law Clerks

Central to ERA’s mission is the mentorship of the next generation of legal advocates. As a part of that goal, we welcome law clerks each year who assist with research and legal projects, and staff our Advice & Counseling helpline. This summer we are very excited to welcome three law clerks who share ERA’s passion for social justice.

Amy Maurer is a second-year law student at Harvard Law School. She earned her B.A. in political science and environmental studies at Washington University in St. Louis, graduating with honors. At Harvard, Amy is currently planning a symposium for the Harvard Negotiation Law Review focused on the use of institutional design to benefit women and minorities in the legal profession. She is also on the board of the Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review, and she is an active member of the Women’s Law Association and Law Students for Reproductive Justice. Amy is very excited to be working at ERA this summer, and she is looking forward to learning more about how to be an effective advocate for gender equity in the workplace and education.  

Carly Starkey is a third-year law student at the University of Miami Law School. She grew up in Tampa, Florida and earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s in social work before attending law school. She acted as a social worker in schools, homeless shelters, and as Project Coordinator with the Institute for Family Violence Studies, where she developed trainings on domestic violence and sexual assault for law enforcement officers, medical professionals, and lawyers. At UM Law, Carly has fueled her advocacy efforts into the Environmental Justice Clinic, working on a class action in reaction to widespread contamination in public parks and fighting illegal housing displacement practices. She is also a Miami Public Interest Scholar and a research assistant for Professor Donna Coker, whose scholarship focuses on criminal law, gender and inequality. She previously interned with the ACLU of Florida, where she advocated for transgender rights and criminal justice reform. Carly is grateful for the chance to work with ERA this summer to advocate for systemic change to ensure gender equity in employment and schools. 

Emma Eastwood-Paticchio is a rising second-year law student at Stanford Law School. She is from Ashford, Connecticut and earned her B.A. in English and American Literature from Middlebury College. She then worked as a research analyst at the Office of the Attorney General of New York. Since starting at Stanford Law School, Emma has helped form a new student organization, Stanford Law Students against Gendered Violence, and leads an accompanying pro bono project focused on domestic violence policy work and direct services. She is also the managing editor of the Stanford Technology Law Review, a vice president of student initiatives for the Stanford Public Interest Law Foundation, and a member of the housing pro bono project. Emma has been working to draft a model Title IX policy for colleges and is excited to learn more about gender equality in education this summer at ERA. She is also looking forward to gaining a better understanding of how to increase equal access to economic opportunities and ensure fair wages for all through advocacy and impact litigation.
