Yesterday, the Trump administration took the callous and offensive step of withdrawing federal guidelines that ensure schools protect transgender students’ right to a safe and equal education. This move was not just politics – it was an attack on students’ civil rights.
This decision clearly shows us where the administration’s priorities lie. Instead of working to clear the Office of Civil Rights Title IX complaint backlog or ensuring our campuses are safe for all students, the Department of Education has begun its agenda with attacking the very students who need protections the most. Only weeks into her position, Secretary DeVos has demonstrated that she is not prepared to stand up for students’ safety.
However, Title IX of the Education Amendments Act is still federal law. Schools still must ensure that students’ rights to an equal education are not threatened by gender discrimination.
ERA and our allies nationwide stand ready to defend Title IX and any infringement on students’ abilities to safely pursue their education. We cannot let hatred and bias impede the success and happiness of young men and women.
